2008 “The Sculptor and the Philosopher’s Stone: Georges Vantongerloo’s Cosmic Vision of Art”

        Wieczoreck (Associate Professor of Modern Art at UW) convincingly proved how Vontongerloo

        used non-Euclidean geometry to transform realism into abstract sculpture. This principle

        visualizes that geometry is expansive instead of restrictive. Vantongerloo was a founding

        member of the De Stijl group that included Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931), painters Piet

        Mondrian (1872-1944), Vilmos Huszàr (1884-1960), and Bart van der Leck (1876-1958), and

        the architects Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964), Robert Van ‘t Hoff (1887-1979), and J.J.P. Oud

        and Holman regarding their new project “A Couple of Ways of Doing Something: Photographs

2008 Highly Opinionated Hot Picks in Contemporary African Art – What African artist to buy with

        $100,000?; Which art would go into a Global African Show and which would you pick for an  

        exclusive African Art show? In 1992 African art was still considered unknown to the American

        market and survey shows were useful but today there maybe enough artists that it is time to

        leave the survey behind. Shows discussed included the Snap Judgements: “New Positions in 

        Contemporary African art Photography” (2006) and the (2004) Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

        show “Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti”, a group exhibition

        exploring the cultural impact of the famous Nigerian musician and activist who died in 1997.

        Artists included were Radcliffe Bailey, Brett Cook-Dizney, Satch Hoyt, Barkley Hendricks,

        Moshekwa Langa, Yinka Shonibare, and Wangechi Mutu. Presented by New York curator,

        critic and visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Vasser College Isolde Brielmaier and Trevor

2008 Paul Horiuchi: Finding Nature A discussion of the life and work of prominent northwest artist

        Paul (Chikamasa) Horiuchi (1906-1999): How the artist developed his signature style in

        collage, his continued work in watercolor and how nature, the weather, and his heritage all

        mingled together and were a dominate force in his art. At his first one-man show in May 1957

        at Seattle's Zoe Dusanne Gallery, 22 of his 24 casein and tempera paintings on rice paper

        were snapped up by collectors, by 1959 Time Magazine was calling him “a major new artistic

        talent” and how still in 1983 his show at Woodside / Braseth Gallery sold out before it opened.

2008 “The Crossing of St. Peter’s and the End of the Renaissance” How the creation of the four

        marble sculptures found in St. Peter’s in the Vatican City, Rome: Saint Helena, 1629-39 by

        Andrea Bolgi (1605-56), St. Veronica 1629-39 by Francesco Mochi (1580-1654), Saint Andrew,

        1629-33 by François Duquesnoy (1597-1643), and Saint Longinus, 1629-38 by the mastermind

        of the design Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), have come to be recognized as a pivotal

        moment in art history when the Renaissance ends and the Baroque begins. Presented by

2008 “Zacherias and Chicago Settee: Connecting the Masterpiece to the Master” How the names of

        seventeen Haida artist from the village of Skidigate, British Columbia were recorded by James

        Deans in the records for a set of 29 northwest coast Indian model houses that were

        commissioned for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and how Bill Holm’s

        work “Will the Real Charles Edenshaw Please Stand Up?” helped to connect the identity of

        some of the artists like John Cross, John Robson and Zacherias based on their own unique
